Ralph Ellison about some unnamed musicians he had wanted to interview for an article on Minton's published in the January 1959 issue of Esquire (the issue that carried Art Kane's famous picture, "A Great Day in Harlem"):
[I realized] that I could write the piece without their help; for after all most of them simply know that they're dissatisfied and that they want fame and glory and to be themselves (or Charlie Parker—which would be even better because most have only that which they've copied from him as miserable, beat and lost as he sounded most of the time—but hell, they believe in the witchdoctor's warning: If Bird shits on you, wear it).
