For the last few years, Spotify has become a useful tool for music enjoyment, tasting, and even research. In spite of it being available only in six countries (Britain, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and France), it has so much potential that for the next few Fridays I'll be posting some of my own playlists and other discoveries.
Today's selection, a 'discovery', is one of Mosaic Records' biggest sets, all 18 CDs, or 27 LPs, of it, 349 tracks and 16 hours of music. Since they don't own the masters of their sets - this one here must be EMI's doing - we shouldn't expect a wholesale availability of their spectacular output... although I must say there's at least another Mosaic on Spotify.
So, without further ado, here it is:
Today's selection, a 'discovery', is one of Mosaic Records' biggest sets, all 18 CDs, or 27 LPs, of it, 349 tracks and 16 hours of music. Since they don't own the masters of their sets - this one here must be EMI's doing - we shouldn't expect a wholesale availability of their spectacular output... although I must say there's at least another Mosaic on Spotify.
So, without further ado, here it is:
I have not checked it thoroughly, but the set seems to have all the Capitol studio recordings and Transcriptions (recordings made especially for radio broadcasting), made between 1942 to 1961 by the trio, on their own or in the company of others, including instrumental and vocal numbers.
That's why you'll find some unexpected, and hopefully welcome, classic stuff like Cole's version of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" (if you had never heard the tune but still recognize the intro, it may be because it was sampled by Living Color, no less), or his 1956 "jazz" album, After Midnight (with Juan Tizol on valve trombone, Willie Smith on alto sax, Harry Edison on trumpet, Stuff Smith on violin and Lee Young on drums). I have no room here to give you all personnel details, but the guitar player is Oscar Moore up to CD 10, track 8; then Irving Ashby up to CD 16, track 3; and finally John Collins through the end. Orchestras and strings come in at about the same time as Ashby, but for more info there are two discographies of Cole here and here.
I guess hard core jazz fans may not like some or most of this music but, any which way you look at it, Cole was a hell of a singer and pianist.

En los últimos tiempos, Spotify se ha convertido en una herramienta muy útil para disfrutar, catar e incluso investigar música. A pesar de que sólo está disponible en seis países (Reino Unido, España, Suecia, Noruega, Finlandia y Francia), tiene tanto potencial que en los próximos viernes iré subiendo mis propias recopilaciones, además de algunos otros descubrimientos.
La selección de hoy, en la categoría "descubrimientos", es una de las colecciones más voluminosas jamás publicadas por Mosaic Records, con un total de 18 cedés (o 27 elepés), 349 temas y 16 horas de música. Dado que Mosaic no es propietaria de los másters que reedita -la aparición de la caja que nos ocupa debe de ser cosa de EMI- no cabe esperar que nos encontremos con todas sus cajas en Spotify... aunque he de decir que hay por lo menos otra colección de Mosaic.
Sin más preámbulos, les presento:
No lo he escuchado entero, pero parece que esta caja contiene todas las grabaciones de estudio y las "transcripciones" (grabaciones exclusivas para la radio) para Capitol, realizadas entre 1942 y 1961 con el trío, por su cuenta o en compañía de otros, incluyendo temas instrumentales y vocales.
Por ese motivo el oyente se encontrará con algunas sorpresas, esperemos que agradables, clásicos como la versión de Cole del "Lush Life" de Billy Strayhorn (si no conocía el tema y aun así le suena la intro, puede ser porque la samplearon los Living Color, nada menos), o su "disco de jazz" de 1956, After Midnight (con el trío más Juan Tizol al trombón de pistones, Willie Smith al saxo alto, Harry Edison a la trompeta, Stuff Smith al violín y Lee Young a la batería). No me cabe aquí toda la información discográfica, pero si cabe decir que el guitarrista es Oscar Moore hasta el tema 8 del CD 10; luego viene Irving Ashby hasta el tema 3 del CD 16; y finalmente John Collins en el resto de los temas. Las orquestas y las cuerdas empiezan aparecer casi con la entrada de Ashby, pero para más detalles, aquí y aquí hay un par de discografías de Cole.
Supongo que al núcleo duro de los jazzeros les gustará más o menos esta música, pero se mire como se mire, Nat King Cole era un tremendo cantante y pianista.
