As chance would have it, this blog is leaning towards Chicago jazz (see posts on Johnny Griffin and Willie Jones) which can only be a good thing.

ogist (er...) Andy Hamilton's nudge on the ribs, I've been listening to Brad Goode lately. Quite a lot, actually. For those who don't know him, trumpet player Brad Goode (Chicago, 1963) is an unassuming but inventive musician, with his own take on bop, but devoid of those dreadful clichés. He is now a professor at the University of Colorado, but he did have his combo in Chicago between 1986 and 1998 which also served as the house band of the Green Mill club, where he had the chance to play any passing musicians, such as Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Sheila Jordan and Pepper Adams, as well as illustrious locals like Von Freeman and Ira Sullivan.
So... a definitive candidate to a "must check out" list, right? Well, now there's no excuse at all. Goode has uploaded some tapes of his on his website (see below). Ohio... is a pianoless trio, a setting I love and which Goode obviously relishes, while Midwestern... has the one and only Ira Sullivan, who we'll have to talk about someday (in the meantime, try to get hold of Larry Kart's article on his Jazz In Search Of Itself to know more about who must be one of the most proficient trumpet-cum-sax players around.)
These are the links to the "virtual albums" assembled by Goode:
