Jazz in Chile, today: Tempo / Gonzalo Palma Trio

This is the last post (for now) of this "Jazz in Chile, today" series. Before we go on to today's video, be advised that the 11-episode Tempo documentary will be launched tonight at 21:30 local time (same as US Eastern Time, that's UTC/GMT-4) on Canal 13 Cable, which can be watched on line (go to http://cable.canal13.cl/ and click on "véanos en vivo"). A new episode will be broadcast every Sunday, with repeats during the week (Tuesdays at 20:00, Wednesdays at midnight, 3:00 and 14:30, and Saturdays at 14:30, all local time, same as US ET). You can click here for a detailed schedule, or visit Tempo's slick website for more information, videos and pictures.

For anyone who's passionate about jazz or quality music in general, there's always the overhanging question of how to make it reach more people (or if it is at all possible). It's quite obvious that, even though we're talking music, visuals are essential, and if we look back on this history of jazz we'll realize that its "golden age" has a very powerful imagery - just a coincidence?

Nowadays, with technology getting more and more readily available, video seems the way to go (like Bret Primack, the JazzVideoGuy, has been demonstrating for a few years now). It'll be interesting to see whether Tempo does the trick. From the very little I've seen of Tempo and the whole jazz_cl series (devoted to the history of jazz in Chile), production is very good and, more importantly, they achieve a very fine balance between serious artistry, which is confined to the music itself, and the unpretentious and down-to-Earth character of the musicians themselves. The good thing is that the featured bands are not, by any means, all there is to jazz in Chile. Something's definitely going on West of the Andes and it's worth checking out.
