Only a few days ago, my worthy constituent Agustín Pérez Gasco (whose blog is another véritable trésor) mentioned that the French Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) has uploaded some videos that should merit some attention from jazz fans.
Make some time for it, because, if you're reading this, chances are you're going to need it. The amount of footage presenting jazz legends from today and yesterday is just staggering. Personally, I've appreciated the chance to watch musicians that are not so "popular", like saxophonists Bobby Jaspar, Lucky Thompson, or Brew Moore, or American expatriates like Kenny Clarke, Lou Bennett and Jimmy Gourley (and his Gibson ES-150, Charlie Christian-style), or even Bud Powell and Sidney Bechet. And it's not only the music, the interviews are quite something too.
For some reason, I cannot work out the embedding of this videos, but in any case, here you have a few interesting links:

For some reason, I cannot work out the embedding of this videos, but in any case, here you have a few interesting links:
- An interview with Thelonious Monk, from December 15, 1969.
- An interview with Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge, from October 18, 1958.
- An interview with Max Roach, from March 12, 1960 (with Bobby Boswell, Julian Priester, and Tommy and Stanley Turrentine in the background).
- Jean Cocteau talks about jazz, from November 22, 1958.
- An interview with JJ Johnson, with Pierre Michelot dubbing as interpreter, from May 26, 1961, announcing the recording of Perceptions (Verve).
- The three brothers Vian play "The Sheik of Araby", with Boris on trumpet, from January 25, 1958.
- André Hodeir talks about the MJQ, from July 23, 1957.
- Miles arrives in Paris, on July 25, 1963.
- Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Barney Wilen, Guy Lafitte and Stan Getz play "Indiana", from November 22, 1958 (less than 2 minutes, and still...).
- Lucky Thompson, Bobby Jaspar, Sacha Distel, Martial Solal, Pierre Michelot, and Kenny Clarke play "Now's The Time", on September 12, 1957.
- Brew Moore, Jimmy Gourley, Lou Bennett, and Kenny Clarke, on July 1, 1961.
- A drum solo by Art Blakey, from September 11, 1974.
Enjoy!

My French is rudimentary or dusty, so I gave up on the idea of embedding the INA clips very quickly, but perhaps one of your French readers would know what the secret code is? If anyone does, please tell me as well: I long to have the very brief DON'T BLAME ME by Vic Dickenson for my very own. What other treasures are there in the video vaults of other countries, I wonder? And what made INA appear like this . . . and will there be more?
Cheers as always,
Michael Steinman

Same here, Michael. If anyone discovers the secret formula for of embedding those INA videos, please spread the word by the jazz blogosphere!
Cheers,
Agustín
