Algunos sabrán que en los últimos años he estado investigando sobre la vida y la música de Eddie Costa, (en adelante EC), un pianista y vibrafonista interesante aunque hoy olvidado, en general. He estado enredando con Spotify, lo último en música gratuita en la Red, y he montado una recopilación con toda la música que he encontrado en la que interviene Costa. Esta colección no representa lo mejor de sus grabaciones (faltan, por ejemplo, sus discos a trío para Jubilee y Dot) y no es para nada representativa, pero da cierta idea de la variopinta actividad de un músico tan apto en la improvisación jazzística como en las sesiones de grabación de todo tipo en el Nueva York de los cincuenta. La lista de Spotify incluye grabaciones a su nombre (el disco Guys and Dolls) y a las órdenes de Sal Salvador, Tal Farlow, Johnny Mathis, Chris Connor, Tony Bennett, Michel Legrand, George Shearing-Nancy Wilson, Woody Herman, Terry Snyder, John Lewis (con Ornette Coleman de estrella principal), Benny Goodman, Mundell Lowe, Bob Brookmeyer y Shelly Manne (el tema "Lean On Me", mi grabación favorita de Costa).
Aunque Costa era, sobre todo, pianista, aquí aparece tocando más el vibráfono. Hasta que publique mi discografía de Costa, se pueden obtener más detalles en la de Tony King.
Insisto en que esta lista no es representativa (la última vez que conté los elepés en los que toca superaba los 150), y para quienes no lo conozcan, harán bien en fijarse en los cuatro temas con Tal Farlow, más los de Sal Salvador y Shelly Manne.

Some of you may know that in the last few years I've been researching the life and music of Eddie Costa (EC, hereinafter), an interesting but rather overlooked pianist and vibist. I've been playing around with Spotify, the latest fad in freely available music and have made a playlist of everything I've found with Costa in it. The selection is not his best (the trio albums for Jubilee and Dot are not here) and it's certainly not representative, but it does give a certain idea of the activities of a 1950's studio/jazz musician, with recordings made under his own name (the Guys and Dolls album) Sal Salvador, Tal Farlow, Johnny Mathis, Chris Connor, Tony Bennett, Michel Legrand, George Shearing-Nancy Wilson, Woody Herman, Terry Snyder, John Lewis (Ornette Coleman as main soloist), Benny Goodman, Mundell Lowe, Bob Brookmeyer and Shelly Manne ("Lean On Me", my single favourite Costa recording).
