After last week's list of the Paul Desmond Quartet featuring Jim Hall, I immediately went to see whether Spotify had anything by the other great pianoless quartet with Hall on guitar, also from the Sixties, but with a different wind instrument at the helm: Art Farmer on flugelhorn (exclusively - no trumpet here). And yes, all the official stuff is there, plus a few extras.
This seems to have been a short-lived combo - their recorded output comes from 1963 and 1964. They did all their three albums for Atlantic, two in the studio (Interaction and To Sweden with Love), and one live At the Half Note. There's also an "Andorran" reissue which combines the Half Note recordings with some others extracted from a live show for the BBC, recorded on June 6, 1964 (see some extracts here). Personnel is always as in the picture, except on the BBC show, where the drummer is Pete LaRoca.
What's not in the list is their performance on Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual (aired on January 10th, 1964) and their participation in another Atlantic LP, about two weeks prior to the "Swedish album", by an obscure singer, Anna Schofield, also known as "Anamari" (brief aside - you cannot imagine how common a name this is in the Basque Country). I did some quick searches and found out the sad news that Ms. Schofield passed exactly one month ago today, on November 3rd. You can read a bit about her here. It does seem that this was the highlight of her career as a singer.
I won't say much about the music. Farmer has always been a very consistent and sensitive soloist. It's interesting, as he tells Ralph J. Gleason in his programme, that he stopped playing trumpet altogether and devoted himself to flugelhorn when he started this combo. Hall is in splendid form, and the surprise comes from Steve Swallow, who's on double bass, and at 23-24 he was already an exceptionally melodic player.

Después de subir la lista de la semana pasada, Paul Desmond en cuarteto con Jim Hall, fui inmediatamente a mirar si Spotify tenía algo del otro gran cuarteto sin piano con Hall a la guitarra, también de los sesenta, pero con un instrumento distinto al frente, en este caso Art Farmer al fiscorno (exclusivamente, aquí no toca la trompeta). Y, sí, está toda su producción oficial, más algunos extras.
Parece que este combo tuvo una vida breve, ya que toda su producción data de 1963 y 1964. Grabaron sus tres elepés para Atlantic, dos en estudio (Interaction y To Sweden with Love), más uno en directo, Live at the Half Note. Además existe una edición "andorrana" que combina el disco del Half Note con otras grabaciones extraídas de una actuación retransmitida por la BBC, grabada el 6 de junio de 1964 (aquí pueden verse unos extractos). El personal es siempre el de la foto superior, salvo en el pase para la BBC, en el que el batería es Pete LaRoca.
Lo que no aparece en la lista es su actuación en el programa Jazz Casual de Ralph J. Gleason (retransmitido el 10 de enero de 1964), ni su participación en otro disco para Atlantic un par de semanas antes del "álbum sueco", el de una desconocida -al menos para mí- cantante llamada Anna Schofield, alias "Anamari" (nombre vasco como pocos, a todo esto). He hecho un par de búsquedas para averiguar algo más sobre ella, y me he encontrado con la triste noticia de que falleció hace exactamente mes, el 3 de noviembre. Aquí se puede leer algo sobre ella (en inglés). Parece que como cantante su momento fue precisamente este disco.
Sobre la música en sí no voy a decir mucho. Farmer es un solista muy sólido y de gran sensibilidad. La curiosidad es que dejó de tocar la trompeta y se dedicó exclusivamente al fiscorno al empezar este proyecto. Hall responde a las expectativas, y quizás la sorpresa sea el jovencísimo Steve Swallow al contrabajo, que a sus 23-24 años ya era un melodista consumado.
